Resisting civilization’s impact has been their way of life for centuries. Since their ancestors strongly rejected Orthodox reform they have dedicated themselves to protecting their traditions and hiding from the outside world in the most secluded retreats. Their last haven was in Latin America, but they have returned to start anew in Russia. Are they thriving in their newfound motherland?

When I see them, I see life of my grandma in Croatia. She covered her head, woke before dawn and prayed, milked cow, made cream, cheese, made bread in stove same like their from their own wheat, only she had bread stove outside. She had cow, pigs, geese, ducks, vegetable garden. She even made her own pillows made from feathers of her own geese. They even had loom for making cloth. She was dressed like 200 years ago, prayed early, at the lunch time, at the 20:00 and in bed before sleeping.

I love their dedication to preserving their beliefs & way of life. Someone has to do it or we will all be the same. Communities like this is what add diversity to this world. If the children decide to leave, it doesn't seem as though they'd face any brutal punishment as they seem peaceful!

Truly I enjoyed this wonderful documentary. Thankful that this community is encouraged to follow their traditional practices in their ancestral homelands long after the rift that caused them to leave the country. Glad the Soviet nation has welcomed back what should never been tampered with in the first place. Wish more governments were as considerate of traditional ways of thinking, and supported different choices.

@Cerafima Reutov i mean im no scientist but im absolutely certain a imaginary mythical invisible non existent being didnt give me anything in fact i can guarantee that my brain, DNA etc came from my parents you know my dads sperm inseminating my mums egg therefore i get all that i am from ill gladly thank them i mean if im going to believe a imaginary being had anything to do with my conception im also then going to believe father Christmas is real, the tooth fairy is flying about taking our kids teeth, fairies exist, leprechauns are protecting their pots of gold, the devil sat on my shoulders while i had lots and lots of sex with different people before i was married i mea. if you believe in 'god' and dont believe in the aforementioned mythical, magical beings then your a hypocrite pure and simple...religion is brainwashing no child should be 'given' their religion it should be no religion involved in their upbringing and they can research the fairy tales when they are adults...religion is one of the routes of all evil along with money and power look to whats happening with all the Palestine people...all in the name of religion its bullshit i dont interact with religious people i dont have them in my life i cant get down with people who are easily brainwashed and allow churches and religious sects to take money, property, abuse children, keep women subjued, but the man oh god the man at the top of the totan pole, the sexual abuse that happens, elders who are power hungry old men,.jesus came back to life please a man was tortured he fell into a deep medical coma, back in those days they didnt know that so presumed he was dead, his brainwashed follows took him to a cave and then he came out of the coma giving the impression hed come back to life....there is a scientific answer to it same as marys immaculate conception...the woman was clearly sleeping with another man who wasnt her husband and then made that story up, her husband was embarrassed and didnt want to be humiliated so went along with the immaculate conception kids are told about ALL the different religions in the world if they choose to be taken in by ONE of them when their older thats their choice and theirs alone

@Louise Kirk To you who is so concerned about the "children". I am an orthodox old believer, living in America, and still practice the faith. The struggle to keep this faith alive living in the midst of the modern world is practically hanging on a thread. Yet, our faith alone is what has held us all together, across all time and distance! You worry that the children are mentally oppressed? Know that with EVERY culture spread out of ALL of time, there are always some that are oppressed one way or another. You preach against children being raised in religion? Somehow your opinion of raising children must be more profound and correct than the thousands of years these remnant peoples have been doing? Some families choose to live secluded some dont, we are free to choose what is best for our families, though we resiliantly adhere to the unchanged faith...our clothing are all sorts of "different" but some how shows the ancient roots undoubtedly. Why, why do you think that such a beautiful way of life is forced? Have you not considered they love it? You may be far from understanding that. Yes it is hard. Yes it is rigid, yes it should be all consuming....what "Better" is there? We all become that time we are free to choose what is the truth. The ignorant fall away. The sterner the parent, at least with them, the child as an adult makes the truer choice. Their own choice nonetheless.
You, my friend, when you speak of refusing the children to learn religion, life is full of beliefs, only your imposing yours on mine. Your collective will not win. It is chaos. And in chaos heros emerge. God always wins. Remeber that, the least you can do is thank him for the beautiful brain he created in you. The choices he freely gave to you. The mercy.

I actually really admire their way of life. They seem genuinely happy and connected with the earth and their food and each other. No screens. No distractions. Few worries. That said, I think they could find even greater joy if they lived this way simply because they enjoy it rather than because they feel they HAVE TO to avoid sin. I think it's an important disctinction. When one does something simply because it they feel it's the right thing to do and brings happiness, it allows their minds to be more open to things that could possibly bring them more happiness. I think the contention over whether or not the knives should be cleanes from sin for example, is something so trivial that they are only doing because they believe God said to, rather than doing it because it brings them more happiness. I think if they really thought about it, they'd realize they're missing the point. This small thing is causing contention (aka sin) and if they were open minded to small changes or compromises, they might find more freedom and joy. Does that make sense? Im having a hard time explaining what I mean.

Well, just look at the way it's set up. This isn't even including the parents' work schedule, but just the kids'.

      24 hrs in a day
      Kids should sleep 8-10hrs
That leaves 14 hrs (of conscious development) in a day
School is 7 hrs, but lets out at 3pm, leaving 7 hours a day to spend with your kids, and that's only if your schedule aligns perfectly with the school's schedule, which is rarely the case. On average parents get home from work in U.S. at 6pm, leaving just 4 hrs a day to spend with your kids, which is only 1/8 of their day. Meanwhile, the time they spend in school is almost double that amount.

Many people are commenting that they would like to live the same way as these people. I don't believe it would be easy. Like the jungle tribes who are happy as long as they don't know about modern ways, but as soon as they discover shoes, they never want to go back to being barefoot. I admire people like these who haven't been corrupted by the world, but the children need to be kept ignorant of the material goods that others have otherwise they will quickly be lost to materialism. The saying "ignorance is bliss" is true.

For many it has much to do with everyone around them living like that, too, as well as being at least somewhat secluded from other society. . @VidEt Oh yes. I wish I was a younger man. I've been looking at remote cabins to buy, but off-grid scares me a bit. At my age I'm looking for something to live out my life in and the physical aspects won't be (or aren't) what they used to be. I've spent quite a bit of time learning about and growing food, canning, baking, etc, building, preserving, I am very good with a sewing machine and make my own clothes now. I can do carpentry and plumbing, but the chances of using the skills are slipping away fast.

    • VidEt

Immersion in the wildly materialist world is indeed pretty corrupting, if you're raised in it, it's hard to be happy without it. Though there are definitely some people who have chosen to leave modern living and are VERY happy in these simpler kinds of lifestyles. (I did it for ten years and wish I was still homesteading. I was 1,000 times happier in my cabin with no electricity, growing my own food, than I've ever been in a house with internet, phones, and a world with cars, etc).

I respect their way of life and think it's a beautiful way to live. I wish I could live a life like that, minus the religion aspect. But I'm too hungry for knowledge and science and art to leave my current life behind. Different strokes for differnt folks. I just hope they are at some point given the choice to learn about the outside world if they so choose to. Not that I believe it's a must, but I know even in regular society we struggle when our loved ones hold us back from knowledge they believe contradicts their beliefs. All societies do it, so I'm not just saying it's a problem with communities like this. The only difference is with the internet and the like we can seek it out without even having any idea about what we are seeking out and get answers and decide for ourselves, even if it's something our parents arent interested in or for. It doesnt seem like these people really have that out, unless they turn their backs on their loved ones and are then seen as outsiders. That's my only issue. I know all cultures and societies arent the same and the western world is vastly different with some of it's own vain qualities but I know I'm lucky to choose my own path even if my parents disagree. I'm not trying to look at it with my western view, because they seem very happy. I just know my parents have never been knowledge hungry and have never taught me anything in that way. But I've sought it out myself.
Edit: scratch bits of my comment. Its seems people are allowed to leave and return so my bad for commenting so early on. I'm happy about that, because I know some similar communities don't believe it that

@Kaspars zihmanis . No disease, not even tooth decay, is caused by a “fluoride deficiency.”(NRC 1993; Institute of Medicine 1997, NRC 2006). Not a single biological process has been shown to require fluoride. On the contrary there is extensive evidence that fluoride can interfere with many important biological processes. Fluoride interferes with numerous enzymes (Waldbott 1978). In combination with aluminum, fluoride interferes with G-proteins (Bigay 1985, 1987). Such interactions give aluminum-fluoride complexes the potential to interfere with signals from growth factors, hormones and neurotransmitters (Strunecka & Patocka 1999; Li 2003). More and more studies indicate that fluoride can interfere with biochemistry in fundamental ways (Barbier 2010). These are ACTUAL studies done with facts.

Such a beautiful way of life. As harsh as it is, it is worth living. Every moment a dark prospect broken by the light of wise and strong people. The visceral connection with nature is something that our modern day peoples can not even begin to fathom. To take away from civilization is to give back to Mother Earth.

I had the privilege of meeting a family of Old Believers during one of my trips to Russia. I learned so much from them about their history, their past and present lifestyles, and their beliefs which is the foundation their lives are built on. I will always be grateful to them for their willingness to share so much of themselves as well as answering my many questions. While I don't think that I would enjoy their lifestyle 24/7 it is appealing to think of living a simplified life in a much healthier and quieter setting.

not really comparable. the anabaptists ran to the americas, found good land for agriculture and are established in commerce. these guys look fake and the resettlement program looks fake. ukraine and the southern end of the volga always had the black soil, longer growing season and good connections to neighbouring countries. but instead, they go to the typical russia which is remote, sparsely populated and inhospitable. 6month growing season, mostly thin rocky soil, summer is mosquitos and winter is -20°C. somehow, they will "live on the land" and trade. bullshit. they are moving cocaine and arms. Bolivia and Brazil???? LOL!!!

@Brit Girl great. At least you *saw* a doctor. I was paying 600$ a month for insurance (JUST insurance, that didn't include co-pays, prescriptions [one was 850$ a month after the monthly battle with the insurance], and deductibles), and STILL had to fight for 15 years for a medically needed hysterectomy (that cost an additional 300k), and to almost die from sepsis after the ER tried to write my symptoms off as *depression* (never been depressed a day in my life). 10 days in the ICU? About 1.5. Million. Be happy for the NHS. It's not going to bankrupt you like it did my mother-in-law after my father-in-law died from misdiagnosed cancer.

Russian old believers normally treat medicine, doctors are simply afraid that a group of people who have a large number of children, who have lived for a long time in other climatic conditions, has lost immunity to Northern diseases and has forgotten the experience of how to cope with them. a banal cold, which is treated by the local 3-day bed rest and 30 cups of tea with raspberries , and can not spread among others, due to the presence of a certain immunity, among a group of immigrants from the South can turn into a very severe and extremely contagious infection.

They seem like lovely people, and I do believe that distinct cultures such as this should be maintained and treasured. At the same time, I feel terrible for the children who are never given a choice. When you're raised in such a cloistered manner, isolated from anyone who doesn't believe as you do, you grow up with no idea what the world is like. You have no understanding of other faiths, lifestyles and worldviews. Therefore, ending up in your parents' tradition is almost certain. There's no true choice. I think children should be given conventional schooling that equips them to make independent decisions. Being exposed to other cultures or faiths doesn't mean you'll give up yours. In fact, it can be quite the opposite and make you really value where you came from. But those who decide they'd rather not maintain these old ways, what options exist for them? How can they decide to go to university or travel the world instead? How can they begin to search for a faith the resonates with them when they're ignorant of all others? I think schismatic religions like this need to have more faith in themselves and their god. If what they're offering is true, meaningful, good and worthy, it'll stand the test of time. Many Amish allow their kids a rumspringa, time to venture out of the community and try "worldly" life. They might smoke, drive a car, get a phone, drink, go dancing, travel, work a job outside their community and so on. Lots come back. The Amish are very strong. Those who do return are completely committed and dedicated to that way of life. They are't left with questions and doubts about what they might've had if they'd left. And they aren't blissfully ignorant, either, they';re well informed. I think that's the best way.
