According to the owner of the company I work for, this single quarter has been more profitable than the last 6 combined, all thanks to "inflation." Which is to say, he heard there was inflation and jacked our prices by 25%, then blamed inflation. I have to assume this is not uncommon.

Honestly, we haven't been doing it due to inflation at my work - but we have been paying more for products, and selling them higher, due to scarcity. Perhaps some clients believe the higher prices are due to inflation, but the true cause with ours was scarcity.

Great explanation of inflation’s effects on people.
Policy makers trade our long term well being for short term pleasure all the time. You can tell it’s happening when they start harping about “crisis” and “emergency”, or the more recently fabricated “too big to fail”.
Starting with the most powerful, in descending order we are given some “stimulus” to smooth out the bumps, they say. But when regular people start getting thousands of dollars/euros/marks in the mailbox, you know savers are going to pay for it all. Soon.

I think there's a big, obvious, thing you missed here. Even if a non dollar-denominated asset sees no real gains during inflation that's still much better than holding cash and seeing your real purchasing power undermined. In other words, sometimes you have to chose between the lesser of two evils.

Inflation has to happen, we’ve been in a race to the bottom for 20 or 30 years if not longer, there’s nothing more to cut and the credit cards are maxed out and people aren’t getting paid enough relative to cost. It sucks it’s unpleasant but we have done it to ourselves with crazy policies that have lower wages, raised prices and prioritised risk over quality of life.

    • Cormac Taylor

@Nicholas Smith sure that’s a problem too. You’re a victim of the side vs side lie. They are both run by the same politicians. Two sides of the same coin. Corruption is on both sides. People who think one side is the problem allow the problem to continue on forever. Divide and conquer is the oldest strategy in the book.

@Nicholas Smith I’m not talking about safety nets. I’m talking about free money no questions asked in exchange for lifelong dependency and votes. You clearly don’t understand how the corruption works in the states. Safety nets are good. They are also limited. Free money for votes is not.

Your “real return” might be diminished because of inflation. But it’s still better than having cash that’s not in an environment where it has the opportunity to grow. I’d say a lot of people try to time exits and entries around inflation, but I’d much rather just ride the wave of the long term.

Very informative. Currently I have pulled out a big portion of my holdings in bond portfolios since I don't think the yield paid is justified for the rising inflation risk. I use the fund to sell SPY puts at strike price $390, $380 and will keep roll up the contract if they don't get assigned. I think equity is the best inflation hedge. Among them especially the growth stocks since they can commend their price better, and can raise money from the market with relatively low cost. Example will be Apple's extremely low bond yields.

You don't invest in stocks during periods of inflation, you invest in assets. Real things that have real value. Those things will adjust in price with the valuing and devaluing of currency. Land is the best example. This being said, if you're going to be holding onto the stock for ten years, then go ahead and buy stocks. The objective during times of inflation is not to increase your wealth/purchasing power, it's to not lose any of it.

Raw land doesn't produce any income, and has holding costs (Local Taxes). I don't disagree, but better, IMHO, to go with something that produces income that offsets holding costs. Rentable farmland, woodland, houses, apartments, mobile home parks, storage parks, etc. are just some alternative ideas.

2 things to look for in a business during periods of high inflation according to Warren Buffett:

    1) The ability to increase prices rather easily without fear of significant loss of market share or volume.
    2) The ability to accommodate large dollar volume increases in business with only minor additional investment of capital.

Basically look for companies that have competitive advantages, are scalable, and can pass on the cost of inflation to end users. Examples: Apple, Facebook, Microsoft.

1:45 I personally don't think this applies to stocks as inflation decreases the purchasing power of the dollar but in the stock market you're not holding the dollar you're holding shares of a business. Inflation is a direct result of the fed printing money and causes the prices of everything to go up. This also causes the prices of stocks to go up because hypothetically if the fed gave someone infinite money and they started buying millions of shares of AAPL. The people selling those shares would start to think they can raise the amount they ask for when selling a share(I believe this is happening right now in the stock market just on a smaller scale). This is why I think inflation effects stocks because it increases the demand for shares therefor raising the price.

First an error- Inflation makes existing debt _Easier_ to pay off as the real value of the funds owed and interest paid decreases.
Main point- Inflation is a crummy time for investors but not nearly as crummy as it is for those who hold cash. Investing, even at a negative real return, is better than holding cash and watching it lose value.
It can be a risky time to invest as you point out, some businesses will suffer. On the other hand, changing market conditions *always* brings new opportunities.

Many investors were chastened by the big stock
market drop in 2008-2009. Eleven years later, a lot of these investors are still not back in the market. Instead, they may be earning just a few percentage points in bonds or CDs. Here's what's worrying: Buffett has previously clearly expressed that long periods of low inflation will result in higher real returns for investors. And conversely, in high-inflation periods, real returns for investors can get to very low numbers. But the good news is that the best businesses in the world that can pass on increased costs to customers and some can even increase prices faster than the rate of inflation. Your job is to find them (and then not to overpay) - sound simple but can be very hard.

Extremely point by point video Well I will also say this here, Most people don't understand the concept of "buying the dip" buying the dip is all about buying digital assets when their prices are down and selling off when the price rises. Holding is great, although trading is far more profitable. I was able to grasp the knowledge of trading crypt0 assets early enough, but I was still limited due to my lack of technical understanding of how to analyze the digital market, all that changed when I encountered Rico Alan, I must confess it was easier to understand with the assistance of Rico that has made me over good altᴄoin.

I think simple on this matter. Needs over wants. People will buy needs over wants when money is tight. When it comes down to having food in the house or having an iphone. I don't care how good a tech company runs. Ya it may be great but needs always come first. It's nice having electric in the house, running water and food.

Perhaps but in todays world iPhone or any smart phone has become a necessary commodity. Its a computer, a payment system, banking system, E commerce, a phone, can run a business from them, a calendar/contacts, camera, video, entertainment, texting, emailing, social media, news device…etc…I would argue not to many people in modern times will live without one. Our whole life is on these phones. In digital world we live in has become a need and will be more needed as we continue to advance.

Even if this were true, rephrasing something still can add value because it gives more context to the meaning of the lesson, and may help someone understand the concept better or for the first time at all, when the previous example didn't click in their head.

But a good business isn’t passive. A good business pursues business opportunities aggressively and wins in its market. Brendon is saying the individual needs to do the same and make yourself more valuable in the work you do now. For most, the best way of building their personal capital is doing a great job and keep improving for a business that is constantly finding ways to minimise its costs, including removing non productive employees.

During times of large inflation, make sure you have a big mortgage.

    • Responsible Wealth
      Responsible Wealth 28 gün önce

@Ruben mtz I honestly thought it was just a good laugh, though there are some small, ancillary benefits (the value of money in an offset account against that higher mortgaged amount (assuming it is a variable mortgage) grows in utility as interest rates go up, but that would obviously be outweighed by the higher cost of the mortgage anyway!).

The other benefit is that while interest rates going up is an issue, the fact they go up and its relationship with inflation does undeniable mean that future dollars are worth less - so a $2,000 a month mortgage is 'more expensive' now than the future dollar value of $2,000 in, let's say, 15 years - but unless you had a fixed interest rate (which would only be for so many years anyway) the fact that interest rates will go up in the future progressively is going to sting. If you had a variable loan, that $2,000 a month mortgage will up in value as the bank's rate goes up ...

This is the problem! Most times people with little or no knowledge of the stock market try investing by themselves. It once happened to me, then I learned my lesson and contacted a certified trader, Suzanne Stephens Ellis and everything changed. I started enjoying huge returns from my investment. Nobody can become financially successful over night. They put in background work but we tend to see the finished part. it's not enough to calculate the risk yourself, get a professional now, try querying a search with the above name.
